Caribbean Sanctuary

Every place needs a little St. Regis–that is to say, that exquisite package of all-out luxury, butler service and an unmistakable sense of place. The St. Regis is coming to the Caribbean in November. It’s about time.

Surprisingly, the company did not choose St. Barths or Anguilla or even the Turks & Caicos for its Caribbean debut. The new St. Regis is actually opening on Bahia Beach in Puerto Rico, on a 483-acre site between the El Yunque rainforest and the Espiritu Santo River. In true St. Regis style, this resort promises to be a jewel among its surroundings. Built on a former coconut plantation, the St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort is being constructed in accordance with Audubon International environmental preservation standards (it will be the Caribbean’s first certified Gold Audubon Signature Sanctuary). The 139 guest rooms and suites, and 25 estate homes, are nestled among the seagrape and flamboyán trees, and built no higher than the tree tops. The resort’s environmental preservation plan includes wildlife conservation programs, removal of invasive plants and transplanting of native trees where needed, planting some 12,000 trees and 70,000 plants, stormwater-runoff capture, and energy efficiency practices.

That just proves that luxury can coexist with environmental responsibility. And what luxury. The signature restaurant, Fern, is by Jean-Georges Vongerichten. The Remède spa features private outdoor terraces and hot/cold plunge pools. The golf course, by Robert Trent Jones Jr., has holes along the ocean and views of the rainforest and coastline. And the rooms have all the little luxuries one would expect from the St. Regis, including Pratesi linens, marble baths and technology galore. The butler service that St. Regis is famous for will also be available here, naturally.

It all comes to life on November 4th. Can’t wait to see it in person.
