The Weather Channel girl is calling for low-80s and sun, sun, sun. Spring is officially here in the Sunshine State and convertible season starts right now.
So how about we drop the top on Chevy’s brand new, and hugely enjoyable, Camaro Convertible, crank up a little Jimmy Buffett, and cruise to the beach?
Chevy has done a terrific job of slicing the lid off the Camaro Coupe. Now, at the press of a button, the tight-fitting cloth top whirrs back in just 18 seconds.
But unlike previous Camaro Convertibles, which had the body rigidity of a wet noodle, this latest version feels taut, tight, and jiggle-free.
Take your pick from three engine options. There’s a 312-hp 3.6-liter V6; and two 6.2-liter V8s – a 400-horse coupled to a six-speed automatic, and a honking 426-hp with six-speed stick.
It’s priced nicely too, with the 1LT V6 starting at $30,000, rising to $40,500 for the V8 SS. My favorite: the sporty 2LT V6 at $33,500.
Much as I love the rugga-rugga-rugga sound of a muscley V8, for me the best all-rounder is this new six-cylinder with a six-speed auto.
This is a sweetheart of a motor that feels strong and frisky, yet will average 18 to the gallon around town, and an impressive 29 mpg on the highway.
Inside, this drop-top Camaro can still seat four in reasonable comfort – the rear seat is a tad narrower than the Coupe’s – though that folding top does steal space in the trunk.
At some stage, the Camaro is also going to have to up its game when it comes to interior trim quality. With all its acres of somber dark gray plastic, the cabin is as cheery as a Kentucky coal mine.
But this new Camaro Convertible is one cool ride to satisfy your spring fever. Start slathering on the SPF30 now.
