Reading List — The Art of the Visit: Being the Perfect Host, Becoming the Perfect Guest

In The Art of the Visit: Being the Perfect Host, Becoming the Perfect Guest, Kathy Bertone transforms readers into perfect hosts or guests by teaching them such things as how to confront unwelcome behaviors with grace and ease, set up the perfect guest room and prepare meals suitable for most tastes.

The book is a fairly long 272 pages, but it provides a wealth of information for enjoyable entertaining. In reality, having guests in your home will never be simple. Bertone lightens the pressure with numerous detailed guidelines and tips. We would certainly love to be guests of anyone following Bertone’s advice—with the carefully thought-out itineraries, appealing options for every meal, and attention to the smallest details, even bedroom lighting, who wouldn’t?

Bertone believes that, “Being a great host and a great guest is about having the ability to combine empathy, style and confidence. Knowing when to put your guests or your own needs first and knowing when and how to do it is key to ensuring a stress-free and fabulous visit.” Although the planning at times seems to be more detailed than a busy host can handle, Bertone’s emphasis on communication is key for all hosts and guests.

The author is the co-founder and managing partner of a merger and acquisition firm near Washington, DC. She and her husband often entertained friends and family in their homes. She currently lives in Naples, where she continues to perfect her hosting expertise.
