A self-described Southern gentleman from Memphis, Scott Sherman moved to Naples in 2007 for his job as engineering manager of knee arthroplasty at Arthrex Inc. Though Sherman has earned nine patents in his career so far, his most important role has been as a single father to three grown daughters and his youngest, Shealyn, 13, who has Asperger’s syndrome. When her mother passed away in October 2014, Shealyn moved across the country to live with Sherman. It was a struggle, since he could not find an organization that helped kids after the loss of a parent. Then he met Angela Melvin, a parent in a similar situation who is one of the founders of the nonprofit Valerie’s House, which offers peer-to-peer mentoring for children who have lost a parent or sibling. Sherman joined efforts to help make Valerie’s House a reality and currently sits on the board. He is a graduate of Leadership Collier and serves on the Leadership Collier Foundation’s board of directors. His leisure interests include ballroom dancing, kickboxing, hiking, and traveling. He’s visited six continents and plans to take Shealyn to London, Paris, Rome, and Munich next summer.

Words to live by: Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one.

Personal style: Contemporary, flashy, geek.

Superhero name: Dr. Meticulous.

Stress reliever: I sculpt micro flowers from polymer clay—tiger lilies, orchids, roses, irises, daffodils, hibiscus. You can’t think about anything else when you’re focusing on the details of this delicate piece of art. It’s very Zen.

“Super” spots: The H.P. Williams Roadside Park boardwalk in Ochopee; Title Boxing Club (great workout and the best therapy ever); the fire pits at LaPlaya Beach & Golf Resort; the Sunburst Café.

Guilty pleasure: Bulleit bourbon with a few rocks.

Bucket list: I’d like to make a significant contribution to medical science before I move into the next phase of my life.
