StayInMay Returns with New Lineup of Activities

From April 25 through May 14, world-class performers and artists from around the globe will bring their talents to the stages, galleries, and concert halls of Naples for the sixth annual StayInMay Festival. Join the ranks of over 60,000 attendees who have celebrated the world’s best in the cultural arts through music, film, art, and more with 40 events over three weeks. Here’s a look at what to expect:

10 Time Grammy Award Winner Arturo Sandoval will return to the festival this year and will be featured in the 2 O’Clock Series on May 9 at the Naples Art Association.

ART

The 2017 event lineup kicks off on April 25 with “From Shanghai to Naples,” an art exhibition that showcases the culture-melding work of Chinese-trained artist Deena Gu Laties. Gu Laties will give two workshops demonstrating her varied techniques for calligraphy and Sumi ink brush painting on April 27 and 29, and visit with attendees of the Chinese-themed chef dinner in her honor on April 28.

Giovanni Lunardi, one of Italy’s most accomplished photographers, was a featured artist in the 2014 StayInMay Festival. His stunning exhibition “La Dolce Vita – The Sweet Life” featured more than forty black and white images of Italian fashion, café and street life spanning the past six decades.

FILM

Over the course of three nights, the StayInMay Short Film Festival will feature six films that touch on a variety of themes, from the struggles of motherhood (“Mother of the Week”) to the power of music (“Shade of Music”), and family (“Happy Family”) to prejudice (“A Box Came to Brooklyn”). The films taking part have all won prestigious awards and are exclusively screened at festivals, making this an event you won’t want to miss. Each night will also offer the opportunity to interact with some of the films’ actors, producers, and filmmakers.

MUSIC

During the festival’s run, music-lovers can enjoy famous works of Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Schubert and Rachmaninoff, as well as beloved popular tunes from the 1930s and 1950s. With performances of so many genres – including French cabaret classics, bluegrass, big band, jazz and more – StayInMay has something for every audience member’s taste.

Regarded as one of the preeminent professional vocal ensembles in the country, Seraphic Fire will perform on May 9 at Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church in Naples.

MINDFULNESS

Angela Sanders of Mindful Mindz will join StayInMay for three health and wellness events centered on meditation, positivity, and their relationship to art. On April 26, she will teach the art of mindful meditation; on May 6, explore the power of positive emotions; and on May 10, focus on the connection between meditation, positive emotions, and music.
