Adventure + Anasazi Stew

 call of the wild

Call of the Wild pioneered women’s adventure travel—and the concept of eating well (really well) after a day of backpacking or trekking in the wild. The founders of Call of the Wild say it’s all about the bonding and self-discovery, but I submit that a steaming bowl of Anasazi Stew doesn’t hurt, either.

The cuisine is so good, in fact, that Carole Latimer, the founder, wrote a cookbook titled Wilderness Cuisine because the demand for the recipes was so high. When returning to camp after hiking, kayaking, snowshoeing and the like, trip participants are treated to yummy fare, which may include warm cinnamon coffeecake, Tex-Mex tacos, Tom Yum soup with fresh veggies, and the aforementioned Anasazi Stew, a Southwestern dish that is a company specialty.

But, really, it is all about the adventure. Here’s a sampling of upcoming trips:

  • Nepal: Hiking the Everest Region—They rate this trip “moderate,” but from my experience trekking in the region, I would advise being in good physical shape before setting off. The trip, Nov. 18-28, concentrates on the communities of the Everest Route, including Namche Bazaar and the Thyangboche Monastery. Accommodations are in inns, and yaks and sherpas carry the gear, making the altitude a little more bearable.
  • Guatemala Multi-Sport—This one, Dec. 4-11, includes fun activities like volcano climbing, kayaking, horseback riding and biking through coffee plantations. Plus, a few markets here and there.
  • Discover Death Valley—There is nothing in the world like Death Valley, and no helicopter tour could ever do it justice. The easy-to-moderate Call of the Wild trip, Feb. 26-Mar. 2, involves hiking through valleys and canyons, and over peaks.

Participants are women from all walks of life. Some come with friends, others come alone and make friends. Either way, they are challenged, inspired and nurtured. That, of course, is the beauty of the experience.
