Blooming Ideas: Spring Flowers in Naples

Naples Flower Show - Naturally Naples...On the 26th Latitude - Naples Garden Club - Naples Botanical GardenThere is no better way to celebrate the first weeks of spring than with beautiful flowers. Neapolitans with a penchant for floral design can find inspiration and instruction at three local events and classes.

Naples Flower Show
The Naples Garden Club (239-262-1272) and Naples Botanical Garden host the perennially popular annual flower show March 27 and 28, with the theme “Naturally Naples…On the 26th Latitude.” One of the largest flower shows in South Florida, the event includes a garden market, demonstrations and a juried show. “This year’s show will celebrate the beauty of our surroundings in Naples,” says Renee Waller, communications coordinator at the Naples Botanical Garden.

Meanwhile, to plant some creative ideas for home flower arrangers, floral designer Amanda Hayes-Florance of Fresh, Naples, offers some insight to the season’s floral trends. Try an array of bright color schemes, including splashes of dynamic hues like bright orange and hot pink, as well as metallic shine created with containers or perhaps a few gold leaves scattered among the blooms. “Another trend I’m seeing is what I like to call the ‘modern-garden concept,’” says Hayes-Florance. “It’s a soft and unstructured look that uses weathered or tarnished containers paired with neutral colors, such as champagne, ivory, peach and blush-pink to create a rustic feel.”

The Whole Bloom: Floral Arranging Class
Join the resident florists at Whole Foods Market (239-552-5100) in Mercato on the first Friday of the month to purchase lush flowers and learn how to build your own beautiful arrangements. “The idea for the class came from the popularity of our floral department,” says Amy Spahr, marketing team leader at Whole Foods.

Ikebana International Exhibition - Flower Show in NaplesIkebana International Exhibition
The Naples chapter of Ikebana International holds its annual exhibition celebrating the art of Ikebana, or Japanese flower arranging, March 13-14 at Moorings Presbyterian Church. Along with a traditional ginza marketplace, this year’s event features a theme of  “Friendship through Flowers.” Says club member Goldie Wetcher, “Naples is such an amazing place to live because people come from all over. We have members from Japan, France, Iran and the Philippines, and they all bring something different to the exhibition.”
