Each year, September 21 marks World Alzheimer’s Day, a day organizations around the globe concentrate on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia. To commemorate this holiday, we’ve rounded up some of the best apps on the market to help train your brain and keep your memory sharp (not to mention, they’re pretty fun!).

Simply pick the skills you’d like to improve to receive a personalized training program, and train at least five times a week to get the best results. Want even more options? For those who don’t like too many complications, try Lumosity, the brainchild of scientists and game designers alike. Begin by taking the Fit Test to get your baseline scores on three games (Speed Match, Train of Thought, and Memory Matrix), see how you match up to others your age, and then enjoy daily workouts that challenge five core cognitive abilities.

Clockwork Brain (available on the App Store, Google Play store, and Microsoft store)

Daily Boost

Custom Workout

For crafty people or kids, Clockwork Brain features a series of fun and challenging games specifically designed to test your memory, attention, dexterity, language, and reasoning. Possibly the most unique of each of the apps, each series of puzzles is influenced by Victorian Steampunk and Mayan art.

Cognito (available on the App Store)

Ever dreamed of being a secret agent? Now you can. Cognito offers personalized games, or “missions,” designed to engage five core functions: memory, focus, speed, adaptability, and reasoning. More mature than Clockwork Brain, Cognito has you follow a loose storyline of secret agents and global spy missions as you complete its tests.
