Color Me Beautiful

Most women’s beauty products implore you to hide your imperfections. Whether it’s covering up that unsightly blemish, enhancing your pearly whites or sculpting cheekbones that could cut glass, makeup is suppose to transform. Clinique, however, with its new line of Chubby Stick Shadow Tints, invites you to embrace your curves; at least in theory.

Packaged in chunky, silver tubes, the Chubby Sticks look more like lipstick than eye shadow. The crayon-like barrel, however, makes for easy application and transportability. This is the product’s biggest benefit and selling point. For a relative makeup novice like myself, I found the shadow easy to apply and durable; one quick slick-on in the morning is all you need to last until suppertime.

Chubby Sticks falters when it comes to color palate and product names. While I appreciate the advertising philosophy behind the ‘big is beautiful’ theme, some of the color names are borderline ridiculous. I just can’t take an eye shadow dubbed Fuller Fudge, Pink and Plenty, Ample Amber, seriously. Also, while the neutral shades are lovely (and plentiful, half of the available colors are beige or charcoal) the splashes of color are very bold. I could tell Lavish Lilac wasn’t for my ivory skin tone just by testing it on my hand.

All in all, I would recommend Clinique Chubby Sticks for its ease and durability. When it comes to color choices, however, some shades should remain in the crayon box.
