Last week Land Rover unveiled its new Range Rover Evoque Victoria Beckham Special Edition designed with the help of the former Spice Girl.
What has Posh Spice got to do with car design, I hear you say? Well since ‘Posh’ stopped singing about what she really, really wants, she’s become a highly-respected fashion designer. She actually won the coveted Designer Brand of the Year awards at the 2011 British Fashion Awards.
And after years of filling her closets with the wares of pretty much every high-end fashion designer on the planet, it’s fair to say Ms. Beckham knows a thing or two about luxury goods.
For this ultra-exclusive new Evoque – just 200 will be built with a mere five ear-marked for the States – she worked closely with the Land Rover design team and design director Gerry McGovern.
The result is actually pretty impressive, and surprisingly restrained. More Cool Britannia than Gaudy Spice.
Based on the swoopy-roofed Evoque three-door Coupe model, it’s the first ever Land Rover to feature hand-finished ‘stealthy’ matte black paint. At each corner are unique 20-inch gloss black forged alloy wheels with discreet rose-gold accents.
Seems the inspiration for the rose gold came from Ms. Beckham’s first meeting with the Land Rover design team when she walked into the room wearing dark clothes and no jewelry apart from a man’s rose gold Rolex.
Rose gold accents – painted, not the real thing – also flow through the Evoque’s heavily-bespoke interior which features absolutely gorgeous semi-aniline leather for the seats and doors that is dyed in a vintage-look tan.
There are lots of other fancy materials used in the cabin – mohair for the floor mats (great for muddy ‘wellies’), micro-suede for the headlining, and piano black for the center console.
Perhaps the piece de resistance is the four-piece set of leather luggage designed to fit perfectly into the Evoque’s trunk.
There’s no word yet on pricing yet but expect somewhere in the region of $80,000 when the special-edition goes on sale in September.
