Summer Fitness: Unique classes to mix up your workout routine

If the idea of running on a treadmill—yet again—leaves you dreading your next workout, shake up your fitness routine with one of these unique local classes in Naples.

Aquatic Aerobics: Taking a dip in the pool is a refreshing way to cool off during a summer scorcher, but the health benefits of swimming go beyond burning a few extra calories. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, water-based exercise can alleviate joint pain for those who suffer from osteoarthritis, which affects about 50 million people. Neapolitans who want to put a fun spin on their swim can try an aqua Zumba class at the River Park Aquatic Center or yoga-infused water aerobics at the Greater Naples YMCA.

Ballet Barre: At Pure Barre studio in Naples, instructors use a barre to teach a ballet-inspired series of exercises to tone glutes, thighs, abs and arms. The classes are designed for women of all ages, and don’t fret – they skip the pirouettes!

Kickboxing: Kick-start your day with kickboxing, a martial arts-inspired workout that combines elements of karate with Muay Thai and Western boxing for a total body workout. Title Boxing Club in Naples offers hour-long classes that include intense cardio, resistance training and core exercises. What’s more, you’ll learn self-defense moves and have fun.

Tai Chi: If you want to find some relief without breaking a sweat, try Tai Chi, a low-impact exercise class based on an ancient Chinese martial art. Often referred to as “meditation in motion,” the class includes a series of gentle movements performed slowly, with a focus on deep breathing. Dr. Joel Ying offers Tai Chi on Tuesday mornings at Love Yoga Center, which also offers a half-hour meditation class and a full-hour integrative relaxation class.
