Mercedes-Benz’ C-Class Coupe

In Mercedes-Benz’ never-ending quest to fill every model niche known to mankind – a Mercedes Oscar Mayer Weinermobile anyone? – just announced is a sexy two-door Coupe version of the starter-Benz C-class.

Now the Benz line-up will comprise a trio of covetable coupes, with the newly remodeled CL at the very top of the range, the lovely E-class Coupe in the middle, and now the C-Coupe.

Of course we’ll not mention M-B’s last effort to foist a two-door C-class on us with that horrid little C230 Kompressor (2002-2007) – a car that looked like it had been rear-ended by an 18-wheeler.

This new one is very different. Being sired from the regular C-class sedan, it’s perfectly proportioned. And, thanks to being an inch and a half lower than the four-door, it looks even sleeker.

That said, it’s a pity the Merc designers didn’t take a few more chances with the sculpting of the roof and rear end. Looked at in profile, that rear side window looks a lot like that of BMW’s 3-Series Coupe’s.

   Three models will be on offer come Fall colors-time when the Benz two-door goes on sale. The entry C250 features a 1.8-liter, 201-horse turbo four-cylinder; the C350 comes with a 304-hp 3.5-liter V6; while the rocketship C63 will boast a 5.5-liter 518-hp twin-turbo V8.

Call that last one the Coupe de Thrill.
