The Yellow Phantom

Yellow Rolls-Royce - Bijan

I’ve always loved that movie ‘The Yellow Rolls-Royce’ with Rex Harrison, Ingrid Bergman and Omar Sharif. It tells the tale of three very different owners of a gorgeous 1930s yellow Rolls Phantom II – an English aristocrat, a Chicago gangster and a wealthy American widow – and how it touched their lives.

I guess legendary Beverly Hills-based haute couturier and perfumier-to-the-stars Bijan loved the movie too. He’s working with Rolls-Royce in England to create a limited edition of 30 highly bespoke Rolls-Royce Phantom models, all of which will be painted – and trimmed – in his trademark shade of acid yellow. The first one is due this spring, priced at around $1 million.

Bijan - Yellow Rolls-Royce

Expect lashings of fabulous hand-stitched leathers and exotic inlaid woodwork, as well has a special Bijan diamond-encrusted clock in the dashboard and a yellow crystal Flying Lady emblem on that famous Rolls-Royce grille.

I can’t say that I’ve ever been a fan of Bijan’s creations – at a recent reception to unveil the car at his enter-by-invitation-only Rodeo Drive store, I tried on one of his $50,000 yellow, kangaroo-skin jackets and felt like some extra from Saturday Night Fever. But it seems everyone from George Lucas to George Bush are huge fans of his bold handiwork.

Me? I’d take my Phantom Drophead Coupe in discreet royal blue with a blue top. This is one car that really doesn’t need to draw any more attention to itself.
