Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve wants to broaden horizons concerning the delicate and dynamic ecosystem in our backyard with the Lunch and Learn lecture series. Running from November through April on the first Tuesday of each month, guests enjoy lunch from Carrabba’s as an expert in their perspective field lectures about an environmental topic. The hour long event, 12-1 p.m., is a great way for visitors and residents to learn more about where they live and how they can help preserve it for future generations.
2015-16’s second installment looks to the historic pioneering settlement on Marco Island. On December 1, join Steven Bertone, long-time Rookery Bay Reserve Cultural Resource Monitor, as he takes guests on a virtual hike through the Little Marco Settlement. Built atop a 2,500-year-old Calusa shell mound—or midden—and village, the historic pioneering homestead known as the Little Marco Settlement, located on Henderson Creek, was once a flourishing settlement with residents eking out a living off the harsh swampy landscape, well before modern day creature comforts became the norm. Bertone will take guests back in time for this lecture, all in the comforts of Rookery Bay’s Learning Center.
