The PAMM | Art Basel Insider’s Guide

Art lovers headed to Miami for Art Basel are in for a bonus this year: The much-anticipated, brand new Pérez Art Museum Miami (305-375-3000) will open its doors December 4, the day before Basel begins.
After a $220 million renovation, the city’s beloved art museum will be unveiled with a new look—and a new name, thanks to an endowment from art collector and real estate mogul Jorge Pérez. Pérez donated $20 million in cash and $20 million of his private collection, a gift that resulted in the museum’s name change. “I felt an obligation to give more to the arts,” Pérez says. “And I felt that my collection should be public, to enhance the education of others.”

PAMM will focus on the works of artists from North America, South America and the Caribbean in a permanent collection titled “Americana.” The museum’s 2013-14 lineup includes a kickoff exhibition by famed Chinese artist Ai Weiwei; “Ai Weiwei: According to What?” will run from opening day through March 16.
Leann Standish, PAMM’s deputy director for external affairs, urges visitors to make a day of their visit and take advantage of the museum’s waterfront location, including its hanging gardens around the first-level terrace and an outdoor café overlooking the water.
