From her Broadway debut as Glinda in Wicked opposite Tony Award-winner Idina Menzel to starring as Ivy Lynn on NBC’s hit TV show Smash, it’s safe to say Megan Hilty has reached star status. Her stellar performance in Broadway’s 9 to 5: The Musical led to several award nominations, including the Outer Critics Circle Award. While her powerful voice may be her signature characteristic, Hilty’s talent extends far beyond singing. The triple-threat actor-singer-dancer juggles her time between stage performances, television roles and voice-overs for animated features. Hilty also recently released her first solo album, It Happens All the Time.
This year, Hilty is traveling around the country performing live concerts—with husband Brian Gallagher and 3-month-old daughter Viola in tow. Her tour includes a stop in Naples for TheatreZone’s tenth anniversary season, with three performances at the G&L Theatre at Community School of Naples, on January 23 and 24.
- Tickets cost $50.
NI: What will you be performing at your concert in Naples?
MH: We’re actually in the process of putting together a brand new set. We’ll include songs I almost always perform, like ones from Smash, and definitely some from my new album.
Do you prefer Broadway, television or animated movies?
I just like working! I like being busy. I really loved working on Smash because it was the best of every type of work—singing, acting, performing—combined in one job.
What are you working on next?
I’m doing a workshop for a new musical based on The Honeymooners. I also have a bunch of concerts coming up. We love doing these concerts; my husband is in the band. We like to make the shows less structured and a little more personal, like we’re hanging out in the living room. No two shows are the same.
