Carmella Fernandez, M.D., M.B.A.

Dr. Carmella Fernandez is an orthopedic and plastic surgery trained upper extremity surgeon, specializing in both non-operative and operative treatments for the hand, wrist, and elbow. Following her fellowships at Yale and the University of Pittsburgh, she moved to Naples to begin a private practice career. Today, she represents the less than 5% of practicing female orthopedic surgeons in the United States. Her extensive training in conjunction with her experience as a collegiate gymnast, allows her to relate to patients on both a personal and professional level. Her extensive surgical répertoire includes, but is not limited to, fracture repair, small joint replacement, and endoscopic carpal tunnel release.

“I feel very lucky and honored to have an opportunity to positively impact someone’s life as a surgeon. There is nothing more gratifying than helping someone regain the ability to eat, brush their teeth, and return to work and hobbies that mean so much to them,” says Dr. Fernandez.
Osteoporosis and bone health are of paramount importance in Dr. Fernandez’s clinic. “Many of my patients don’t realize they have poor bone quality, especially women whose bone density decreases dramatically after menopause,” she says. She recommends taking calcium and Vitamin D supplements daily, and DEXA scans to monitor bone health.

An outspoken wellness advocate, she wants to see more impactful healthcare reform and a return to the traditional doctor-patient relationships. When she’s not working, she enjoys going to the gym with her husband, and spending time with their 12-year-old Chihuahua, Alex.
